Mike Phelan considering his future at Manchester United after voicing concerns over club’s structure

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant, Mike Phelan, is yet to commit his future to the club as he is concerned about the structure behind the scenes at Manchester United.

The former United midfielder served under Sir Alex Ferguson for a decade before the Scot’s retirement and was sorely missed as David Moyes opted against keeping the 56-year-old at Old Trafford. Solskjaer’s first call after being offered the United job was to Phelan and the Lancashire-born coach has proved pivotal in restoring the mindset lost at the Theatre of Dreams since Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

Solskjaer has already signed a three-year deal with the club to become their permanent manager and is desperate for Phelan, who has spent much of his time in Australia in the last five years, to stay.

However, the Daily Mail claim Phelan is concerned by the club’s ‘convoluted’ management structure and feels there’s a muddled approach to their recruitment system.

Moyes was said to be shocked at the club’s bloated scouting network and Solskjaer shares the Scot’s view, believing that the club need to streamline their approach to reduce their 58 scouts around the world to a more manageable number.

Phelan is happy to be back at the Theatre of Dreams but it’s been over a week since Solskjaer signed his deal and the club are still trying to persuade him to sign his own.

This summer is set to be an important one for the club with as many as six outgoings expected. Solskjaer will be handed signficant funds to invest in his squad but the level of his spending will be impacted by the club’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
